Ms Sheena...
this ones pretty good-
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/eurvoya/index.html
theres a lot of links to follow, and a whole section on columbus. check it out...
this ones about the effect on the explorers on the native americans. basically they were really welcoming and peace-loving, and the explorers noticed that, but they just took advantage of that and said that their peaceful nature would just make them easier to conquer.

everybody's grown up with stories of columbus and how good he is, etc. but this site lists all the reasons why he is NOT the hero americans think he is. he didn't even know his geography, he thought he was in india! how can we celebrate a man who caused so much destruction, and what good he did all happened by mistake?
HI this is Aneesh from the against group
hi thanx for info
If Christopher Columbus had not discovered The Americas, We would have sokme great traditions still.
Columbus is responible for most of the weaponry. If he had not discovered America, the war tools would not have been invented.
Columbus brought a lot of diseases to the Americas. He raided the local empires and used them for his advantage! How rude!
http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/explorer.htm
its got a lot of links about various explorers
If South America and The Carribean Islands had not been in his way, Im sure Chris Columbus would have conquered India and (or) China
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~CAP/COLUMBUS/col3.html
i dnt know if its soo gud or not but its the best one i could find..
the war weapons which colombus helped to invent crated alot of destruction becaus e the more advanced guns he made killed alot of people during WW1 and WW2.
so that means because of those weapons he killed many people in america and also this is about the fall of america not if it helped in ww1 or ww2
ummmm shreya this website doesnt really give much
http://www.helium.com/tm/439924/european-explorers-first-indians

u said..."If South America and The Carribean Islands had not been in his way, Im sure Chris Columbus would have conquered India and (or) China"
Although most historians believe Columbus's own claims that he was from Genova, there are others who think that he was hiding his true descent or past. Of those the one that is most prevalent at present is the theory that he was a converted Jew. Hate against Jews was high in those days, in fact they were expelled from Spain in 1492, and converted Jews would be suspect as well.

christopher columbus was the reason that most of the tribes in america were ruined and people ended up leaving them for slave trade. if he dint go to america they would still be alot more inside tribes.
This site is really good it tells us alot about the facts that Christopher Columbus did:-
- He dint discover the america's the vikings did.
-He was a slave trader.
-He distroyed he balance between man and nature.
-He distoryed the natives land.
page three of this site shows in detail.the site is:
http://www.osia.org/public/pdf/Columbus05_factvsfiction.pdf
a really wierd but winning argument would be that he was racist and ne comminted DENOCIDE and could have kiiled millions or people in a very short time
janvee the site doesnt work...
but thanx for the work
everyone in my group can you all please give me ur email ids????
That is great work guys-good to see so many comments come up-however, don't you feel that if the likes of Christopher Columbus did't exist we would never have progressed the way we have-America,Africa and Asia would never have got to know of superior technology-if the natives of these lands could not defend their land from the onslaught of the Europeans the fault is with the natives not with the Europeans.
There is no doubt that Columbus was aggressive but has aggression not always been a part of human society? The very act of survival of the human race depends on it-please post your comments on my views ( for as well as against)
ma'am whose team r u helpin
also r u sayin racism is a gud thing
because of christopher columbus racism began
also he slaughtered the natives
they did not want to be at war
r u even sayin that slavery is gud
r u saying that the europeans had a right to make people their slaves
also these slaves died terribly
ma'am read adityas point that christopher columbus had destroyed the cultures
also read kaustavs point on 8bs side that cortez was evil and christopher columbus was not
i disagree, christopher columbus was the reason that most of the tribes in america were ruined and people ended up leaving them for slave trade. if he dint go to america they would still be alot more inside tribes.
this is janvees point
yes some of existance would not be there if christopher columbus did not go to america but more existances in america were wiped out even if they were so called barbarians, but they were humans too.
Kush half of the website somehow got cut off. here is the proper one.
http://www.osia.org/public/pdf/Columbus05_factvsfiction.pdf
ma'am life if C.C hadnt gone to America might have been different. But there would be less global warming because In America there was a lot of natural greenary and stuff like that. And also alot of the invetions that scientsist made and still make go on in America and hence ther is alot of polution and disturbance in the atmospher.
Who here celebrates ''columbus day''?(2nd monday of october)
srry it was writen twice
ma'am i cant delete it???
and ma'am srry for the anguage use...
ma'am, you've said that if the natives couldn't defend themselves against the europeans it was their fault. but they believed in peace! they didn't want to fight any more than they all wanted to die. they weren't used to this kind of warfare. all they had were battles between tribes. look at it from their point of view. you're all peace loving natural hippie (forgive slang term) and suddenly these guys come and they're all about conquering lands, and they've brought their super conquering weapons with them. in addition, they don't live as natural simple lives as you do, and they have a lot of new germs as a result. their germs combined with their weapons and warlike temperaments would be no match for your bows and arrows! these natives came from a culture where after you killed a deer you would have a ceremony where you prayed to its spirit for forgiveness! ma'am are you trying to say it's the natives fault for not having as many weapons as the europeans? are you saying its their fault for having better things to do than come up with more ways to kill people?
the native americans were getting along fine before columbus came! how do we know that given more time, they would have come up with advanced inventions. remember that here we're not just focusing on columbus. there were other explorers too, like cortez. he and his men wiped out the aztecs. they were a highly advanced civilization which only died out because of the europeans. go to
http://www.aztec-indians.com/aztec-civilization.html
doesnt have info bout the explorers, but will tell you what kind of civilation was wiped out by columbus and his ilk. who knows what the aztecs and their fellow natives could have done if the explorers hadn't come in! now, native americans are like ANIMALS in the USA. they are ENDANGERED and the "americans" (who have no rightful claim to the name, the only true americans are the natives) condescend to build SANCTUARIES for the natives. what was once the civilization that ruled over the americas are now reduced to a mere 0.9 percent of the population of the USA! (http://www.cdc.gov/omh/populations/aian/aian.htm) is this not pathetic?
also, the native americans have been burdened with a name that does not describe them at all. INDIANS. they are not indians, and in no way are they similar to those from india except for their name. and that name is all due to columbus's pompous insistence that what he had found had to be right, with no semblance of double-checking facts. any true indians here who have grown up in the USA should know what i mean, with the constant confusal of your race with the Cherokee or Nez Perce! i know it has happened to me several times, and it's all because of columbus!
ok guys, let's say a new kid comes into class from a faraway country which u havent really heard of. now this kid has lots of cool stuff from her country, and you think that's really awesome. you want to be nice to everyone, so you act charming to this new girl. you want to make her feel welcome. and she returns the favor and you two become good friends. she even brings you stuff from her country! in return you show her round and give her some of the stuff you have. then one day she starts acting really mean to you. and you ask her why and she tells you that she only liked you for the stuff you have, and nothing else. then she goes away and totally abandons you, after using you.
wouldnt you feel hurt? i know i would. but this is what columbus and his fellow explorers did! they took advantage of the native americans' kind, welcoming nature and treated them like dirt!
alright, im sorta posting a lot but im very very very very pro-native american and i have a lot to say when it comes to defending them.
but whos gonna be a witness? i would like to be one. i have a native american doll we can use as a prop, i also have a redhead doll in jeans and a tshirt we could use to symbolize modern stuff....i dunno kush tell me if i should do anything for the witness thing....
also ma'am when will the court room drama actually be? because if it's soon we better start preparing. and who will be the jury? are we going to do it like an actual court of law? cuz that will be awesome. tell us when it will be, we need to do a speech! i think it should be as close as possible to october 8 which is columbus day. not that i celebrate it. its also canadian thanksgiving but thats different......

Hello. I am in the "for group". From my research i can't really claim Cristopher Columbus as a legend. He may have discovered America (on accident), but come on! He didn't have to destroy the native culture completely. They WERE the ORIGINAL CIVILIZATION of America. Yeah, yeah he made some discoveries, but they would probably be discovered sooner or later (not to mention in a way that would destroy any civilization).
In other words, he did it only for the fame, wealth, and glory. HE IS A FAKE.
Pleaze correct me if i said somthing incorrect and explain.
i meant in a way that wouldn't destroy any civilizations
Christopher Columbus’ arrival was a chain reaction. After him many explorers such as Cortez followed him into the Atlantic and reached the coasts of present North and South America. They reached South America where the Inca civilization was destroyed because they were rich with gold. Cultures were lost due to the conquest of unknown lands and the destruction of ancient civilizations. Hinduism has lasted for more than 10,000 years but the Native Americans lasted for maybe 200-300 years. This is because the native Americans were wiped out.
Some historians believe that Columbus accidental discovery of the western world led to more expeditions of conquest. During this period, the pope reigned supreme in Europe and anyone who opposed the pope was deemed a heretic and could be in danger of his or her life. Many kings and queens of the European countries made sure that they propagated the religion as well. So when Columbus came back with the news of land in the west, the people who financed the later expeditions also insisted on not just material goods but also for more of the new world people to be converted to Christianity. This led to some leaders using all and any means to subdue the natives and in some cases, wiping some civilizations.
Ever since Native Americans first came into contact with European explorers and settlers, they have been perceived in many different ways. These perceptions have changed over time and have included a variety of different images, from warriors to a vanishing race to protectors of the environment. Most non-Indians, however, have formed their ideas about Native Americans not through firsthand experiences, but based on how entities such as the government or the media have represented them.
The complicated history of how non-Indians have perceived Native Americans begins with the explorer Christopher Columbus. Initially believing he had landed in Asia (what the Spanish called the “Indies”), Columbus called the inhabitants of the Americas “Indians,” a misnomer that has lasted to the present day. Columbus also brought preformed understandings about Asia and its peoples with him to the Americas. Asia was a trade center and a non-Christian place, so the first Europeans encountered Native Americans with these expectations in mind.
As Europeans explored the Americas, the expectations for wealth shaped their ideas about this new place and its people. Recording his first day in the Americas, for example, Columbus wrote, “I worked hard to know if there was any gold.” The desire for riches would shape European perceptions of Native Americans for centuries. Failing to find gold, Columbus turned to the capture of Indian people, proposing a future traffic to slave markets in Europe.
As important as the opportunity for wealth, however, was the perception that Indians were heathens. Just as Europeans had inflicted violence on the non-Christian “infidels” in the Holy Land during the Crusades, the Spanish used violence to force Native Americans to adopt Christian beliefs. So-called Indian heathenism justified conquest and missionary activity, not only for the Spanish, but for other Europeans as well.
In addition, many Europeans carried with them germs that were foreign to the American lands and in some extreme cases, these struck new diseases to which the natives had no immunity and thus suffered many deaths. There were also no remedies or medicines for these diseases.
A lot of America was also changed by the introduction of new species. Two of the most famous are horses and tobacco which are non-native to America. Ironically it was the horse and the gun that also were responsible for the death of many natives. Many native Americans today live in abject poverty and live in their own land called “reservations”. While they are free to roam the country today, not long ago they could not leave the reservations. These reservations were almost like prison camps to many native Americans.
"A little genocide here, some slavery there, several mutinies, and multiple executions of crew members later, and became unpopular.
His reputation began to become bad during his second voyage. Happy with the success of 1492, he had been named viceroy and governor of all the islands he discovered. Some 1,400 men went on his 17 ships bound for the gold-studded heaven on earth in the west.. Instead of entering paradise, the Spanish settlers found hell on earth, complete with an bad governor. Columbus promised to find them for Spain. He persuaded the religious Isabella to back him by observing that any gold he might discover could fund a crusade to reclaim Jerusalem from the infidels."
This para shows how columbus had a complete lack of leadership skills
+ lying to queen isabella to get her 2 fund his voyage (bad traits)
" In a letter to Ferdinand and Isabella, he wrote two lines about the Mayans (they were very advanced then, yet he ignored it) and devoted four times as much space to a fight between a boar and a spider monkey."
This shows that he wasn't interested in getting faith in him
Ferdinand and Isabella then lost trust in him.
As usually, he self-destructs his own plans of fame and fortune.

Very good comments posted by Shreya!!You are writing reflects how deeply you feel ....
Oct 8th could be a great day to have the Court Room Drama. The jury members will be your teachers...I have to find out if the teachers I have in mind to be members of the jury will be free on that day and also the time when this session can be held -keeping in mind that neither 8b nor 8c have History periods on Monday...
Good comments Aneesh-you are right, its all a matter of perception-what is acceptable today may not seem so tomorrow...wonder what CC would say to defend himself if brought to our court room drama...
Against team-WAKE UP PLEASE,I am tired of fighting for your cause (also because personally it is very diffficult to justify all that CC & his fellow voyagers did.......
Christopher Columbus wasn't greedy or fame-seeking he would have only mjade one voyage, but NOOO he had to make 4. This prooves he wanted fame fortune and a name. (REALLY GREEDY!!)
P.S. Kush im in your group history4myp told me so
HI!!!!!
Christopher Columbus (1451 – May 20, 1506) was a navigator and colonialist who is one of the first Europeans to discover the Americas, after the Vikings. Though not the first to reach the Americas from Europe, it was Columbus' voyages that led to general European awareness of the hemisphere and the successful establishment of European cultures in the New World. It is generally believed that he was born in Genoa, although other theories and possibilities exist. The name Christopher Columbus is the Anglicization of the Latin Christophorus Columbus. Also well known are his name's rendering in modern Italian as Cristoforo Colombo and in Spanish as Cristóbal Colón.
Columbus' voyages across the Atlantic Ocean began a European effort at exploration and colonization of the Western Hemisphere. While history places great significance on his first voyage of 1492, he did not actually reach the mainland until his third voyage in 1498. Likewise, he was not the earliest European explorer to reach the Americas, as there are accounts of European transatlantic contact prior to 1492. Nevertheless, Columbus's voyage came at a critical time of growing national imperialism and economic competition between developing nation states seeking wealth from the establishment of trade routes and colonies. Therefore, the period before 1492 is known as Pre-Columbian.
The anniversary of the 1492 voyage (vd. Columbus Day) is observed throughout the Americas and in Spain. Columbus had noted that the Indian people were friendly. Controversy came later, since first person accounts depict the genocide of the indigenous people by the Spanish conquistadors.
to elaborate on my last comment: Columbus and his ilk took with them diseases such as diptheria, measles, smallpox, and malaria to which the Native Americans had no immunity what-so-ever. the Europeans also felt that the indigenous peoples were nothing more than "barbarians" and therefore treated them as nothing more. as the Europeans continued to explore through the American continents, the natives were driven out through the diseases they brought and forced labor.
kush give me ur email and ill send a mail 2 u K????
kushcold@gmail.com
Columbus came in and just told the Native Indians that they could and couldn't do. he trashed their culture, recked tier lively hood, and the all died off soon after he landed. he might have just killed off a very important race of people!! no one knows...they all died.

If colombus had not found america then many tchnologies today wouldn't have been formed. Even if he had mistken the americans for the indians he didn't know any better he had never head of a land to the west. It was a totally unexplored area and he named it what he hought it was. The creation of amreica is a good thing it is playing a major part in alot of global politics and is one of the key players in the UN which is the biggest peace keeping organisation.

Ma'am was right with her point about the not bieng able to defend. The Native americans were not as civilised as the eurpoeans without help from the europeans they would have died out anyway through war or other circumstances as it said on http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/eurvoya/columbus.html the first glimpse of these people was of naked and uncivilsed people. This is what would have made up america without the european conquest america which is a leader in many fields, one of the most powerful nations and so on would not have been formed.

Varun, how can you call what the europeans did to the native americans "help"? You said "The Native americans were not as civilised as the eurpoeans without help from the europeans they would have died out anyway through war or other circumstances" but do you call killing out almost the whole race of natives "help"? Do you call winning their trust and then betraying them "help"? look at the site jessica posted. http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1011-27.htm
Do you call raping the beautiful native american women "help"?
varun
once again
r u sayin
racism is gud
slavery is gud
i am from kenya
and kenya is an african country because of the the spaniards african slave trade increased
REMEMBER THIS IS NOT ONLY CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IT IS ALSO HIS GROUP which includes cortes etc....
last year we debated about slavery it is the same here
cc was wore than hitler
everyone thinks hitler jus killled the jews but he had a reason
BUT cc jus destroyed who ever came in his way
he did genocide which succeeded
usually genocide is sumthin which tries to wipe a community
but in this case it succeeded
DO U THINK it is fair if u dont hav the weapons and the enemy does
its like how the groups in this debate its self people thaght it was unfair
even if it was because of cc for the guns and etc.....
we could hav got more from the incas mayas aztecs etc....
DONT ONLY LOOK AT IT FROM THE "RICH" POINT OF VIEW look at it through other points of view
yes cc and the portugies did bring in culture
BUT THEY DESTROYED MANY MORE
!!!!!!
pls how did slavery affect the people
for example in the roman empire people were branded.....
imagine u had to do everythin sumone told u to do without u to say no
also as shreya said the native invited the europeans with open hands but the europeans took advantage of this and exploited them....
varun how can u say they werent civiliezed
IT IS CALLED DEVELOPING
"PUT UR FEET IN OTHER PEOPLE SHOES"
look at other points of view!!!
now ma'am i think u should stop helpin
thank u
http://latinamericanhistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/genocide_in_the_new_world

for those who didn't no, r text book and (sum)notes... this is 4 the "for" team but against can use it 2 if they want!!!
can you really call the native americans "naked and uncivilsed people" and so different from the white men when this is one of their prayers???
And now, Grandfather, I ask you to bless
the White Man.
He needs your Wisdom, your guidance.
You see, for so long,
he has tried to destroy my people,
and only feels comfortable
when given power.
Bless them, show them the peace we understand,
teach them humility.
For I fear they will someday destroy themselves
and their children,
As they have done so Mother Earth.
I plead, I cry.
After all, They are my Brothers.......

rahul's comment on September 18, 2007 9:11 AM wuz pretty true.... there wuz a golf course near my skool that didn't let "colored" ppl. in until around 2000! How rude!
hey guys remember "FOR A TOTALLY WINNING LOOK" guess wat, that was colombus' only goal in reaching the west, and u no wat else??? it backfired like crazy! have u seen how much populartiy he lost by the BEGINNING of his second trip west?!?!
sum ppl. r saying that colombus destroyed the the ntives with wepons and dieseases, which any other explorer wud hav dun, but i quite dissagree, u c, as i sed in my last comment "for a totally winning luk" wuz colombus' sole goal, but i feel that had sum1 less desparate for wealth found Amercia, they would have used the resources through friendshipe, not conquership (if there is such a word) .
while searching for more info. on wat happenend to the native americans i found that a whole book has ben written about it called: conquest by law by lindsay g. robertson. any1 seen, or heard of it or even better hav it???

in the summary on google it showed wat we needed but i couldn't see it too much... color scheme hurt my eyes like crazy.
most in usa think that columbus is a big hero, hey, they even named a state capital after him, but before doing that did any1 think of how he mite have affected america in a NEGATIVE way??? i feel that tho many may feel the same way as the for team, they're 2 afraid to express themselves as they'll b bombarded with the label "un-american" for not likeing him, so those ppl. shud rly speak up, don't u think, they mite be able to make a difference in the world. i'm not saying changing the name of ohio's capital, but they need to realize that columbus wasn't perfect!
hey, just wondering if the actual date of the courtroom drama has been decided.
ok ppl the glitch has been solved, so i'll prolly. b a regular poster now.
Current Attitudes Toward Native Americans
Indians were first introduced to Europeans in the late fifteenth century. The Native Americans were referred to as the "noble redman" at the time. The Native Americans were very helpful to the Europeans and they guided them around what is now America. The Europeans became very curious of this "new land" and they began to settle it. The settlement of America brought conflict and disease to the Native Americans. Conflict over land ownership soon became a problem and there were harmful side effects. Perhaps one of the most harmful side effects was the proverbial slurs and attitudes towards the Native Americans. These vulgar comments and attitudes made back at the beginning of the coexistence of the Native Americans and the Europeans are found amongst us still today. The early concepts of the "good Indian" or "noble savage" quickly were replaced by reducing the native inhabitants to "wild savages" who were standing in the way of expansion under the motto of "manifest destiny." Proverbial invectives have been hurled against the Native Americans ever since Christopher Columbus and later explorers, settlers, and immigrants set foot on the American continent. The Native Americans suffered terribly in the name of expansion and progress. Native Americans were deprived of the homeland, killed mercilessly or placed on reservations. On these reservations the Native Americans were forced to assimilate the rules and lifestyle of the white conquerors and settlers or die. In essence, Native Americans had to give up their identity or be killed (Mieder). Few can comprehend the tragedy inflicted upon Native Americans. During the 1850's the government negotiated a series of treaties with Plains Indian tribes, Southwestern Indian tribes, and the tribes of the Pacific Northwest. These treaties were made only to fulfill Thomas Jefferson's dream of an American Empire stretching from coast to coast. These treaties took advantage of the Native Americans. The general population saw the Indians as "stupid people who were easy to control." Treaties kept appearing in front of the Indians that reduced the land that they held. The takeover of their land and the slaughter of the buffalo herds brought much anger. This anger soon led to action and the Indians were fighting for their land (Hoggatt).

i admit that what cortes did was bad but colombus's exploration of america was a stepping stone which gave other explorers hope and courage for them to brave new boundries. without colombus discovering america than us which may just through around its power to help desicion be made in the un. but it still has helped the un keep peace that is an undeniable fact.i am not supporting racism and slavery they are despecible. Colombus was trying to save his expedition when he took slaves he needed to bring back something to prove the worth of his discovery otherwise he would be killed or imprisoned for wasting the crowns money. Also the destruction of the americas was horrid but it enriched european knowledge and led to new discoveries and more diversity. The destruction of america was collateral damage it was brought down killing thousands of people but US and the other countries that have risen from the ashes of those great civilizations have provided new and brighter futures for thousands maybe millions more. The native americans had many things to give to the europeans and it may have been tken in an unorthodox way but the knowledge has been passed on and it has helped millions. Europe was facing its own problems at that time. The conquistidores did get very carried away and they did horrible things im not trying to justify what they did. I think it is horrible but the overall affect for the world is good
also everybody in my group sart doin some more work we have only a little while left you guys have done great till now keep workin harder
this site has the timeline and maps and other info abr cgristopher columbus
whoohoo! 150 comments! for group rox sox!
columbus brought african slaves to the americas(a cause of racism). even now the africans are descriminated due to columbus
Columbus brought horses to the native americans which helped them in hunting
columbus introduced gun powder, guns, etc to the americas. the native americans would have had a much more peaceful life if columbus hadent found them. war is now a big part in america. the indians used to live peace fully among each other.
woww you people are actually jobless enough to type 150 comments...as for columbus...im cool wid him...
Columbus Day is celebrated because Christopher Columbus found the americas. Well if the americas weren't in his way would there be a Columbus Day (Oct 2nd)
Who put that comment of CC is Ugly??????????
Aneesh say hi to all of you in the lab!! :)
Who is gonna be wittnes and lowayers??
columbus...if it were not for him...the most developed country and also the powerful and best country would not exist...also 80-90% of good metal bands would not exist...go columbus!!!! hes my brother from an ancient mother....and of course the PRS headquarters in maryland wouldnt exist..aaaaah!!
PS Columbus didn't even trust his map. he thought he was going to die. thats way he was nervous to even begin his first voyage.
lots of polution comes from america. the indians were a nature loving group of people who were against cutting trees and killing animals unneccesarily. the europians had many animal killing sport which were brought to the americas. now the americas hardly have close to asmany forests they used to.
without colombus discovering america than us which may just throw around its power to help desicion be made in the un. but it still has helped the un keep peace that is an undeniable fact.MANY COUNTRIES DO NOT SUPPORT THE UN BECAUSE OF THE US THROWING ITS WEIGHT AROUND
"i am not supporting racism and slavery they are despecible. Colombus was trying to save his expedition when he took slaves he needed to bring back something to prove the worth of his discovery otherwise he would be killed or imprisoned for wasting the crowns money."
ARE U SAYING THAT TO SAVE 1 MAN , RASCIM AND PREJUDDICE + WAR LETHAL WEAPONS ARE CREATED
this site is good
columbusnavigation.com
yipeeeeeeeee my first comment
We, the undersigned, petition the President of the United States, The U.S. Congress, and The U.S. Senate to hereby change "Columbus Day" to "Native American Day".
Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he discovered Native Americans living peacefully in their homeland. And, as history has taught us, Mr. Columbus was not even the first to visit America from Europe.
So, then why do we continue to disgrace Native Americans by throwing this "National Holiday" up in their faces? It's about time we realize that as Americans we are continuing the hate cycle by allowing this to continue. We should be thanking Native Americans for taking us in and sharing with us their ancient wisdom.
We have never had a Native American holiday in the U.S. and that is truly a shame. We deem anything we want as a "Federal Holiday" if only for the benefit of government employees having yet another 3-day weekend.
Let us give credit where credit is due. We urge you to change "Columbus Day" to "Native American Day".
The politically correct view is that Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years. Worse yet, it's claimed, the main legacy of Columbus is death and destruction. Columbus is routinely vilified as a symbol of slavery and genocide, and the celebration of his arrival likened to a celebration of Hitler and the Holocaust. The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization.
hey kush that was a really good one right!:D
this is a qoute from one of the indian chiefs after columbus came
"Where Will Our Children Live...
A lonesome warrior stands in fear of what the future brings,
he will never hear the beating drums or the songs his brothers sing.
Our many nations once stood tall and ranged from shore to shore
but most are gone and few remain and the buffalo roam no more.
We shared our food and our land and gave with open hearts,
We wanted peace and love and hope, but all were torn apart.
All this was taken because we did not know what the white man had in store,
They killed our people and raped our lands and the buffalo roam no more.
But those of us who still remain hold our heads up high, and the spirits of
the elders flow through us as if they never died.
Our dreams will live on forever and our nations will be reborn, our bone and
beads and feathers all will be proudly worn.
If you listen close you will hear the drums and songs upon the winds, and in
the distance you will see....the buffalo roam again."
when the Europeans started to arrive in the 16th- and 17th-century they were met by Native Americans , and enthusiastically so. The Natives regarded their white-complexioned visitors as something of a marvel, not only for their outlandish dress and beards and winged ships but even more for their wonderful technology - steel knives and swords, fire-belching arquebus and cannon, mirrors, hawkbells and earrings, copper and brass kettles, and so on.However, conflicts eventually arose. As a starter, the arriving Europeans seemed attuned to another world, they appeared to be oblivious to the rhythms and spirit of nature. Nature to the Europeans - and the Indians detected this - was something of an obstacle, even an enemy. The Europeans brought with them not only a desire and will to conquer the new continent for all its material richness, but they also brought with them diseases that hit the Indians hard. Conflicts developed between the Native Americans and the Invaders, the latter arriving in overwhelming numbers, as many "as the stars in heaven".
"Also the destruction of the americas was horrid but it enriched european knowledge and led to new discoveries and more diversity."
Just to give a few europeans gold and other minerals, millions were massacred??????????? (the pop. of europe was much smaller than the pop. of north and central america
"The destruction of america was collateral damage it was brought down killing thousands of people but US and the other countries that have risen from the ashes of those great civilizations have provided new and brighter futures for thousands maybe millions more."
Are you saying that genocide was committed so that some Americans can boss around the whole world and launch faulty space rockets??????????
(the Russians had first space satellite, first man in space, first space station and first animal in space)
nice work
but u arenot witness
shreya and rahul
and u are the vice group leader and i am the leader
A face peeks out through the foliage. He is watching an extremely unusual sight. Some strange white men have arrived in a large brown thing. As the man watches the strangers, little does he know that his life and the life of all his descendants will be changed forever by these strange white men.
The story of the Native American has been a story marked mainly by betrayal and sorrow. Ever since those white men from across the ocean set foot onto this land, the Native American has lost almost everything--his ancestral lands, his dignity, and even his culture have fallen by the wayside. How interesting it is that the people who came to this land first are the ones who have been shortchanged.
From that first contact through the twentieth century, Native Americans have been ridiculed. The stereotype of the "savage, dirty dealin' Injun" is just one of numerous examples. This has not helped the Native Americans in any way. Slowly, things are getting better, but only slowly.
The ways of dealing with the Indian "problem" have been numerous and varied, but the programs succeeded in tearing the Native American away from the land--land that the Native American held sacred. Whether they be Tainos or Aztecs or Cherokees or any one of many other tribes, they have all been betrayed in one way or another by the white man.
it is great to see such a well networked blog!
who is yasmine claire
"he needed to bring back something to prove the worth of his discovery otherwise he would be killed or imprisoned for wasting the crowns money. "
well he already lost the king and queens trust. look at rahuls comment, sept. 18 9:00 am. if he was so concerned about how the king and queen would think about him, why did he devote four times as much space to a fight between a boar and a spider monkey as he did about the actual PEOPLE??
Everybody in the "for" group, great work! The debate is in 1 and a half weeks
GO "FOR" GROUP
You guys are only lookin at what things america has done wrong what about all the stuff that america is doing right?
it is helping globalization which is a good thing for everyone. it has developedany peace ful technologies like it and europe helped to develope the way we make electricty today they are one of the coutries that are trying to find alternative fuel resources to prevent pollution many people in it seriously care about the enviornment and a few people are naturalist that are making a difference obviously if u only look at the bad than america seems to suck but it really is good and what u said about faulty space rockets? for every faulty space rocket there are 7 more or so that have worker they are also building the ISS(interntaion space station).
The native americans of southa america like the mayas and aztecs were really blood thirsty acctually some native american tribes acctually fought with the europeans against the aztecs.
by the way aneesh and nikhil are the witnesses if u want to be witness then you'll have to ask these 2 if u can switch
this is not about if america is good or not
it is about wat cc did was good or not not
also there is SUCH THING AS CALLED DEVELOPIN
the native americans were not exposed to the outside world
so they were not as developed as much as the europeans
also yes america is helpin in many ways
but it is not the only one
it is a mojority
but u need to count all the other countries and it is still a fraction
It is the worlds no. one country releasing most of the worlds polution
cc did start or boost this in his and the spaniards campaigns in the americas
What do u mean by peace ful developing
because of cc and the spaniards colonization civil war was struck and this was jus for the independance
yes many othe rcountries like kenya had bloody way of gaining in dependance
but these were minor countries which were ruled over by the europeans too
also if u compare how many wars u.s. has been involed in to other countries
during this time period
1900s-2000
the world wars....
the cold war..
the "war" in iraq.
so the weaponization (if it is a word..)that cc and the spaniards started helped to kill many people
in these wars
aditya it was me hu sed cc was ugly and will always be and never be able to fix his uglyness even if he went for a huge plastic surgery!!!
people i dont think many more ideas are left coz like i noe i dont have any more and theres not much more left on the net. but if theres anything else u need kush then temme.
and kush ive emailed u the site i was talking bout its relli gud but for some reason if getting cut of in the middly.
janvee do NOT talk about pointless thins
and jus make sure u know wat u need to no
mmm shreya i have to disagree with u here
they were bloodthirsty in way that they practised human sacrifice, cannibalism, torture and also slavery!
what kush says is true they did practise some very blood thirsty rituals lke the mayas or the aztecs(not sure which one)had game where the winner would be sacrificed, and also young women would be sacrificed. ALso Ancient america wasn't without it's slaves some of the population of the native americans were slaves and were treated just as harshly as the european slaves and by thier own people! much like the shudras of india.
in support of my last post here is a point from http://www.crystalinks.com/mayansociety.html
"Slaves also existed, the slaves being chiefly prisoners of war and their children"
im sorry my group but instead of posting the website only could u send me a bit of relevent info to my email account vann_003@yahoo.com.
thanks
c'mon guys, lets try and get to 200 comments! we can do it!
go FOR group!!!
omg!! u guys are soooo much ahead of us!!! godd at this rate u guys are gonna have lyk a thousand comments by tom!!o btw this is varsh as u all can c.... god our class tatally sux compared to urs!!
varun that is nonsense....
look what technology has made of u now. many girls and boys cant live with out there laptops and computers....the native americans lived happily with out the though of money. they grow and find there food and there children would go and play out in the woods....unlike now many of us are sitting here cooped up in school and in our houses. there were no poorer people because all they need was provided for themby their sorroundings.
look, lets say we all live in this little nativeamericsn clan.....one day as we walk through the forests...we see something big and brown come in view.....something that we have never seen beore....you feel scared, exited, and curious at the same time right. when all we have is friendship and peace they slowly milk us for food and our beautiful minerals (gold/precious stones)...we start doubting but we still treat them as our white brothers. slowly they take our lands and push us to the side we are angered we rase our weapons to fight.....they suddenly bring out black objects that killed your family and friends. they would make treaties for land and promising us land too. slowly many died of diseases our healers couldnt heal, what to do?????
you are looked down at by the white men you thought as friends. you are alone no more dancing around the fire and sowing eagel feathers. slowly one by one your whole tribe dies and you go down with them back to mother nature
how would you feel??????
lets see one of you against guys answe that>>>>>>>IN UR FACE!! MUHUHUHAHA
sorry bout that went a bit crazy over there
ok
varun
they did do that stuff
but did they bring to other countries
did they force u to do labour
WOULD U LIKE IT TO BE TOSSED ON A SHIP AND BROUGHT TO AMERICA TO MINE AND FARM AND WHERE UR FAMILY WILL LIVE AND WHERE U DIE
the natives only did this because it was their tradition and they were not exposed to the outside world.
come on vann
do u think that the native expanded the boundaries of slavery
and wait this is not only about slavery
the europeans were the 1st and biggest link which
brought diseases to america
they took back diseases from the natives and brought to europe
they brought back vices
like cocaine and tobacco
people are still dieing today becuase of this!!!!!!!!!!
now this brings us to rasicm
cc and his group sorta made the natives in to castes like in India
so that u mentioned
they tortured and did much worse tothese civilizations
it is still debated today that DID CC DO THE FIRST AND ONLY GENOCIDE????
AND MAJORITY SAY YES
FOR GODS SAKES WHAT WOULD U FEEL IF THE PANDAS REALLY GOT EXTINCTED
BAD RITE
BUT IN THIS CASE HUMAN CIVILIZATIONS GOT EXTINCT
do u see and mayas or incas or even aztecs left???
You may ask did christopher columbus attack with a reason
and u will say that the natives did
BUT IF SOME UNKOWN PERSON TO U COMES ON UR PEACEFUL LAND WHERE U GREET THEM WID OPEN HANDS AND THEN THEY EXPLOIT
OBVIOUSLY U WILL FIGHT BACK
THEN CC ATTACKED AND KILLED!!
AS HANA SAID SILENT BUT DEADLY!!!
THESE SO CALLED WHITE BROTHERS COME AND FIND U BY CHANCE
THEN THEY SLAOLY TAKE THINGS RITE UNDER UR NOSE THEN THEY ATTACK!!!!
THIS IS SILENT BUT DEADLY
HOORAY
200 WORDS!!!!!!!!!
AND ITS STILL FOR GROUP SOARING
GO FOR GROUP
VANN U THINK I AM TOO COMPETITIVE
look at urself
bring it on the battle field
OK people the court room drama is coming up
NO MERCY
We are going to bring the best out of us and shoot you down
