The court-room trial will be conducted on the assigned day by the group leaders who will take the official positions of public prosecutor and defense lawyer.Each team will also present two witnesses to strengthen their cases.
The members of the group will help their team leaders by conducting research to build up a strong case.The materials found in the course of research must be put up by the team members for viewing as comments on the blog.
This project will be graded based on the following :
Each participant will be graded on the basis of:1.Participation(active involvement and contribution of ideas through the blog)2.Team work(how the participants helped the teamleaders collect material and analyse data ,as seen through the blog)
The team as a whole will be graded on the basis of:1.Preparation and presentation of the case(the handling of the court-room trial on the assigned day by the lawyers,witnesses and group members)

Christopher Columbus and his men enslaved native inhabitants of the West Indies, forced them to convert to Christianity, and subdued them with violence in an effort to seek riches.
On October 12, 1492 (the first day he encountered the native people of the Americas), Columbus wrote in his journal: "They should be good servants .... I, our Lord being pleased, will take hence, at the time of my departure, six natives for your Highnesses." These captives were later paraded through the streets of Barcelona and Seville when Columbus returned to Spain.
From his very first contact with native people, Columbus had their domination in mind. For example, on October 14, 1492, Columbus wrote in his journal, "with fifty men they can all be subjugated and made to do what is required of them." These were not mere words: after his second voyage, Columbus sent back a consignment of natives to be sold as slaves.
Yet in an April, 1493, letter to Luis de Santangel (a patron who helped fund the first voyage), Columbus made clear that the people he encountered had done nothing to deserve ill treatment. According to Columbus:
"they are artless and generous with what they have, to such a degree as no one would believe but him who had seen it. Of anything they have, if it be asked for, they never say no, but do rather invite the person to accept it, and show as much lovingness as though they would give their hearts."

Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez paid tribute to indigenous peoples of the Americas on Sunday and said the arrival of Christopher Columbus sparked "the biggest genocide in history."
"There's nothing to celebrate," Chavez said. "What they did here was massacre the indigenous people."
Last year Chavez signed a decree changing the name of Venezuela's Oct. 12 Columbus Day to the Day of Indigenous Resistance.
Spanish, Portuguese and English invaders slaughtered millions of native inhabitants. The indigenous population of the Americas plummeted from 100 million at the time of Columbus' arrival to just three million 150 years later

Columbus's purpose from the beginning was not mere exploration or even trade, but conquest and exploitation, for which he used religion as a rationale. Typically, after "discovering" an island and encountering a tribe of Indians new to them, the Spaniards would read aloud (in Spanish) what came to be called "the Requirement." The captured Indians were told that if they would immediately convert to Catholicism, they would be given "many privileges and exemptions." If not, "we shall powerfully enter your country, and shall make war against you... and we shall take you and your wives and make slaves of them... and shall do you all the mischief and damage that we can."

The Spaniards were known to cut off and Indian's ears or nose for minor offenses. They hunted Indians for sport and murdered them for dog food. Las Casas describes the Spaniards becoming more concieted every day. Ater a while they refused to walk any distance. They "rode the backs of Indians" or were carried on hammocks by Indians running in relays (they also had Indians carry large leaves to shade them from the sun and others fan them with goose wings.)
In Cibao on Haiti, Columbus and his men ordered all Indians to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they turned over the gold, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Any Indian found without a token had their hands cut off and bled to death. The Indians' task was next to impossible. So they fled, and many were hunted down and killed.

i have a few points that i was not let say on the Debate day....
1) some one on the Against team said that Columbus was given food by the Native Americans and if he had not gone over there those fruits and vegetables would not have been discovered. this is wrong......the native Amer. WOULD have discovered them...THEY ALL READY HAD!!!!!! Columbus just took the credit!!
